Help:Citations

Citations are the lifeblood of a wiki, as they ensure the content of pages is both accurate and easily proven. Everything added to the wiki must have a source. This ensures that fan theories and individual interpretations of events don't detract from the reliability of the information maintained on the wiki.

Finding Sources

If you know roughly what time period and/or POV the event happened in, check out one of the VOD masterlist spreadsheets pinned in #lore-resources on the wiki Discord for quick access to VOD links.

Use YouTube's autocaption feature to quickly find certain words or phrases in a VOD! Click on the meatball menu next to the like/share/clip/save buttons underneath the video and hit "Show transcript" to open the full transcript of automatic captions, and then use ctrl+f to search whatever phrases or keywords might be useful to find the quote or moment you're looking for.

Unfortunately this is only useful when the autocaptions are in the correct language - if you're looking for a phrase said during an English-speaking conversation when the majority of the VOD is in Portuguese, the autocaptions will likely be in Portuguese and therefore won't have captioned the English spoken in the section you're looking for.

Adding citations

Citations should be placed at the end of the sentence or paragraph that they are for outside after any punctuation or notes. See more: Style Guide.

Source Editor

To cite something in source editor the citation must be inside of the <ref></ref> tags. To format our citations we use these citation templates. Place the template inside the ref tags and fill in the required parameters.

Visual Editor

When using visual editor on desktop, go to Cite -> Basic, click "Insert," Template, and then search for either Cite video or Cite tweet in the search bar. Fill out the required fields. Examples and descriptions of each field are provided.

Citation needed

Sometimes when adding information to the wiki, a source is not readily available. This could be because the livestream that the information is from is still ongoing and a VOD to cite has not been uploaded yet. It could also be because the editor does not know exactly where the information originates. When this happens, use the Citation needed template to let other editors know that there are sources that must be found.

Source Editor

This is an example of the syntax for this template:
{{Citation needed|reason=Example reason|date=Example date}}

Visual Editor

Click Insert>Template and search for "Citation needed." Fill out the fields. Neither are required but they are very helpful to other editors.

Citation needed examples

When looking for citations from the citation needed templates, if you hover over the link it will show the reason if added. Example:
File:Citationneeed.png
This is an example for an unsourced claim.[Citation needed] This is a citation needed template with a date to help future editors find the source more easily.[Citation needed]

This is another paragraph. It has a citation needed template with both a date and extra information for any citation hunters.[Citation needed]

References section

The references section of a page is where all of the source information actually goes, and what clicking on the citations leads to. It is a list of all of the citations on the page numbered and in order of first appearance. We put our references into a scrollbox so that they don't take up the entire page.

To see how to add a references section visit our pages for the source editor and the visual editor.
